Wuhan is the capital of Hubei province in the People's Republic of China. The Wuhan General Plan of Development (2010-2020), ratified by the State Council of China, states: “Wuhan is a well-known historical and cultural city of national importance in China, one of the main cities in central China, the most important industrial base of the country, a scientific and educational center, and a complex hub of transport communications.”

In its direct subordination, Wuhan has 13 administrative districts and 3 state zones for developing the latest high technologies. The total area of the city is 8569 square kilometers.

Wuhan is one of six cities in China where foreign countries have opened their consulates. Among them there are France, the United States, South Korea, the United Kingdom and others.

Geographical location

Wuhan is a very green park city with beautiful mountain and river landscapes. The third largest river in the world Yangtze and its largest tributary Han river merge in the city center. The water space area occupies 25.1% of the total area of the city, which puts Wuhan on the first place among other major cities in China based on this indicator. Wuhan has the honorary title of “State Garden City of China”, “State Forest City of China”, etc. There are 165 large and small rivers and 166 lakesin the city. Therefore, people know Wuhan as “River City” and “City with a hundred lakes”. The most important feature of Wuhan is that it is a “city on the banks of rivers and lakes”.


The population of the city in 2017 was 10,600,000 (ten million six hundred thousand) people. If you place Wuhan in the center of a circle with a radius of 1000 kilometers, then there will be about a billion people and 90% of the total volume of China's economy in this circle.


The main results of Wuhan’s development in 2017:

- GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of Wuhan - 1,340,000,000,000 billion (one thousand three hundred forty billion) of Chinese yuan.

- The total amount of investments in basic social development funds is 780,000,000,000 (seven million eighty billion) yuan.

- The trading volume of public goods is 600,000,000,000 (six hundred billion) yuan.

Wuhan is one of the birthplaces of China's modern industry. There exists a complete industrial system: motor industry, metallurgy, equipment production, optical electronics, biological medicine, and other industries. In Wuhan environmental protection is provided at the proper level. Wuhan stands first in the country on the scale of industrial production. The Dongfeng Motor Company, headquartered in Wuhan, and the Wuhan Iron and Steel Corporation are among the 500 largest companies in the world.

Wuhan is a city with a high rhythm of life and a stable innovative environment, which are good conditions for creating a new business. Such industries as the newest high technologies, optical electronics and information technologies of new generation, production of advanced equipment, new materials, high-tech services, biological technologies, creation and production of new medicines are developing very fast. In addition, in Wuhan such sectors as energy saving, new energy resources and creation of machines and mechanisms operating on non-traditional energy resources, modern agricultural technologies, environmental protection, etc. have been widely developed.

Wuhan can be called the engineering and design capital of China. The amount of engineering such facilities as super-high-speed railways, super-large hydrosystems, super-large bridges, high-speed highways, continuous large-scale metal casting, etc. occupy 50-80% of the quotas in the whole country. The work of Wuhan scientists and engineers in the development of electronic information technology programs, engineering of the vessels’ parts, biological selection, etc. have a good reputation throughout the world. The Chinese general construction company - the Third Department of Chinese Construction - is also situated in Wuhan. Wuhan Donghu New Technology Development Zone is the second state indicator of independent innovation after the Zhongguancun in Beijing. The Wuhan optical electronic information industry, known as the “Optical Valley of China”, occupies an important place in the global market for this kind of products.


Wuhan is an integrated hub of transport communications of China. Aviation, railway, water, automobile and other transport highways meet in the city. Wuhan is the most important center of the steamship line in the middle stream of the Yangtze River. It is also the center of China's railway networks and an important hub of high-speed highways. Wuhan has a modern airport that accepts both domestic and foreign flights.

Tianhe International Airport in Wuhan has direct flights to cities such as Paris, Moscow, San Francisco, Tokyo, Seoul, Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and others, in total of 53 international directions.

8 state railway lines and 14 high-speed highways pass through Wuhan from north to south and from west to east. Direct cargo railway “Wuhan – Europe” passes through Moscow. Port Wuhan on the Yangtze River is a large and unique river port with a tonnage of one hundred million tons, which is located 1000 kilometers from the sea. Wuhan connects direct waterways with both the sea and other rivers.

Excellent geographical location, uninterrupted operation of all means of transport make it possible to turn Wuhan - the new Chinese flower capital - into the most important tourist city of China. In 2013, the number of tourists who visited Wuhan reached 170,000,000 (one hundred and seventy million) people, which brought it to the fourth place among other Chinese cities.

History, culture and places of interest

Wuhan is a statistically significant historical and cultural center of China. The town of Panlong, that existed 1600 years ago in the Huangpi district of Wuhan, is the most ancient town in the south of China. Wuhan is considered one of the oldest cities in China. In the city there are 365 monuments of architecture, including 29 major monuments under state protection.

The Xinhai Revolution, which overthrew the feudal autocratic system that had existed in China for more than two thousand years, broke out in Wuhan. Wuhan is also a city where the largest number of European style architectural examples in the inner regions of China have been preserved. Among them there are more than a hundred structures made by the Russians or for Russians. The Orthodox church of St. Alexander Nevsky is the most ancient church which still exists outside of Russia.

The Yellow Crane Tower is a symbol of Wuhan, one of the third biggest Towers on the South of China. The main building’s length is about 51,4 m. The Tower is famous for its ancient history and culture.

Cinchuange Tower is located on the North Bank of the Yangtze River on the Eastern Guishan mountain slope. Cinchuange and the Yellow crane tower are divided by the river. Standing on opposite coasts, these two towers are different from each other. ТеремЦинчуаньгэ was built during the reign of the Minsk Emperor Jiajing in memory of Daye who subduedthe river flood by removing the channel.

Lake Donghu is the largest lake in China within the city frame is located in an urban area between the inner ring and the Central ring of Wuhan. Its length is about 33 sq. km. It is a clean lake with winding shores which are called99 convolutions. The whole scenic area is divided into six zones: Tinto, Moshang, Loan, bayma, Lohan and Cuidi. It’s a well- known place across the globe.

Masani (mountain Mushroom) is located on the territory of the Donghu area.Lake Donghu is surrounded by mountains in the East, West and North . Mountain Moshan isapproximately 2200 m from East to West, andfrom South to North it is for about 500 m. They have six peaks. The highest peak of the Dongfeng seems like a stone mushroom, hence the name of the mountains.

The Hubei Museum is located near the Donghu. It is in Hubei province center for collecting, archeology, researching, historical exhibits and revolutionary relics. There are about 200 000 exhibits. Unique archaeological findings are the following: a musical instrument of bells belonging to Csango and a bronze sword of the Prince of the Kingdom of Yue Hossana which drew the attention of the world.


Wuhan is a sports city. Thirteen champions of the Olympic Games came from there. Diving, ping-pong, badminton, sports exercises, lifting weights are the priority kinds of sports. The winner of world women's tennis competitions Li Na was born and grew up in Wuhan. Since 2014 the International Open Tennis Competition among women (Women's Tennis Association) has moved from Tokyo to Wuhan. According to preliminary request, all top 20 players of the world will participate in this tournament. Competitions of swimmers crossing the Yangtze River also attract swimming fans from other countries.


Currently more than twenty thousand foreign citizens work and study in Wuhan. Many talented people are concentrated in the city of Wuhan. There are 69 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Engineering Sciences of China. In the city, there are 89 universities, including 7 universities directly subordinated to the Chinese Ministry of Education. More than 1,300,000 (one million three hundred thousand) people study in Wuhan, which puts Wuhan on the first place among other Chinese cities. 

Cooperation between sister-cities

The agreement on friendship, exchanges and cooperation between the cities of Izhevsk (Udmurtia, Russia) and Wuhan (China) was signed on June 15, 2016.
